Anna Maria Island is a barrier island located on the Gulf of Mexico, just off Florida’s west coast. Residents here work hard at balancing land use with wildlife protection, paying particular attention to the island’s very active population of nesting sea turtles and shorebirds. A group of dedicated volunteers carefully monitor the turtles and shorebirds on Anna Maria Island. Earlier this year, as oil gushed unchecked into the Gulf, independent producer Diane Bock met with naturalist Suzi Fox, executive director of the group, to count nesting shorebirds.
