AARP Utah Appoints New Members to Executive Council

Three new members were recently appointed to AARP Utah’s Executive Council. All three are from the Salt Lake City.

Nancy McCormick earned a Bachelors Degree in Political Science from the University of Utah, a Masters Degree in History from the University of Iowa, and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Utah. Nancy retired after 31 years as a teacher and administrator in public education where she taught Civics and US History at Highland High, served as assistant principal at Hillside and Glendale Intermediate Schools, and spent 12 years as Principal of Washington and Escalante Elementary Schools. She was president of Utah’s Elementary Principals Association, served on state education committees, gave presentations at national and state professional meetings, co-authored two books on Utah history and numerous articles on education administration, conflict management, and team building. For the last two years she served as an AARP Utah Volunteer Area Coordinator.

Born and raised in Butte, Montana, David Turner has served as the Program Director of 17 Senior Centers for Salt Lake County Aging Services since 1997. He received a Masters in Education and a Graduate Certificate in Gerontology, both from the University of Utah. Turner previously worked as Program Coordinator with Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation and a Program Manager with Salt Lake County Aging Services. Turner has directed the Healthy Aging Program which provides leadership in the community in prevention, education and health screening services for older adults, and has been President of Health Promotion Coalition for Older Utahns. In addition he provided curriculum development for Wellsprings: a caregiver support project, Good Grief: a series on death and dying and Your Healthy Old Age : A video series based on A Healthy Old Age.

A graduate of Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Dana Wilson also received a B.A. from Oberlin College. Early in his career he held positions as a Clinical Associate, National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland and as an Assistant Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 1970 – 1995 he was a Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah, and from 1995 until his retirement in 2007, he worked as a primary-care geriatrician at St. Marks Hospital in Salt Lake. Wilson also served on the Board of Directors, Community Nursing Service in Salt Lake City. He has written over one hundred research or review articles for scientific publications on topics including diabetes, hyperlipidemia, mycology and medical genetics. Dana also currently serves on the ACLU Speaker's Bill of Rights Program Committee.

They join State Volunteer President Pat Gamble Hovey, State Director Rob Ence, Kent Able of Highland, Betty Lynn Davis and Lou Jean Flint of Salt Lake City in making up the newly expanded Executive Council. Members serve two-year terms with opportunity to be re-appointed to additional two year terms up to a total of six years.

The three state coordinators for AARP’s national programs, Paulette Welsh, AARP’s Driver Safety Program; Roger Miner, Executive Director of the Utah Retired School Employee Association; and Jack Dahl, AARP’s Tax-Aide Program, also serve as ex-officio members of the Council.
