AARP President Lee Hammond, Regional Vice President John Caine, Virginia State Director Bill Kallio and Virginia State President Warren Stewart spent AARP Day of Service preparing meals for the hungry in Richmond.

“We assembled 900 meals, which accounts for the sore feet,” Kallio said after his shift ended.
The group donned hair nets, gloves, and armed themselves with giant spatulas to prepare meals for FeedMore’s Community Kitchen. The Community Kitchen, one of the initiatives of Central Virginia Food Bank, feeds 3,000 people every day. It is a production kitchen that prepares meals for the Kids Cafes and other non-profit feeding programs supplied by the food bank. Kids Cafes provide a balanced evening meal or snack for 1,900 at-risk children in after-school programs.
On Sept. 9, Hammond, Caine, Kallio and Stewart teamed up to fill plates. The group filled plates and cups with food and sealed them with plastic wrap.
The Central Virginia Food Bank (CVFB) serves 31 counties and 5 cities, but approximately half of those agencies are located in the Richmond Metro area.
Recipients of CVFB food and programs include, but are not limited to:
- Newly Unemployed
- Mentally Challenged
- Working Poor
- Battered Women
- Victims of Natural Disasters
- Single-Parent Families
Sixty local churches and charities concerned about growing hunger and poverty among the people in the Central Virginia region established the Central Virginia Food Bank in 1980. To address these concerns, the Central Virginia Food Bank became an affiliate of Feeding America, the Nation's Food Bank Network. We It serves 31 counties and five cities, from the Northern Neck to Louisa County and south to the North Carolina border. CVFB was named "Best Foodbank in the Nation" in 1998 and remains rated in the top ten each year.
