2010 Andrus Award Winner Inspires Spirit of Service

Capt. Nuru Neemuchwalla has been selected by AARP, to receive California’s 2010 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service, the Association’s most prestigious and visible volunteer award for community service.  This award symbolizes that individuals have the power and ability to make a difference in the lives of others.

AARP California selected Neemuchwalla for his remarkable service and for the impact he’s had on the lives of others and on his community.

Capt. Nuru, an AARP member for over 20 years, joined our volunteer ranks in 2005. Working primarily in the East Bay area, Nuru helped the Contra-Costa Community Presence Team as a Federal Affairs Specialist.  Since then, he has been actively advocating for seniors with various Bay Area elected officials, community partners, constituents and more.

“This award acts as a symbol to members and the public that we can all work together for positive social change,” says AARP California State Director Tom Porter.  “AARP has long valued the spirit of volunteerism and the important contributions AARP volunteers make to their communities, neighbors, and the programs they serve.”

Neemuchwalla remains actively engaged and involved in the planned activities of the California office to improve the lives of East Bay residents age 50 and over.  Whether fighting for health care reform, visiting elected officials or helping members utilize resources in their community, Neemuchwalla can always be counted on to advance the work of AARP.

Capt. Nuru was born in Bombay, India in 1938. At the age of 18, he joined the Merchant Marine Academy. He worked in the merchant navy and rose to the rank of Captain. In 2000, Capt Nuru retired as Terminal Manager from the Danish Shipping Company, Maersk in Oakland.

Nuru believes seniors must get involved, stay informed and volunteer to keep Dr. Andrus’s dream alive and to follow their own dreams.

About the Andrus Award

The AARP Andrus Award for Community Service recognizes members and volunteers who, through volunteer service, are significantly enhancing the lives of individuals age 50 and over. The award will be formally presented to Neemuchwalla at a ceremony in September.

Recipients across the nation were chosen for their ability to enhance the lives of AARP members and prospective members, improve the community in or for which the work was performed, and inspire others to volunteer.
