AARP Tax Aide Volunteers Help Many Nevadans

More than 23,700 people were helped by AARP Nevada’s volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service in 2010. Nationwide, AARP volunteers assisted 2.9 million American taxpayers. This year, AARP Tax-Aide, which is the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service, is seeking volunteers in communities across Nevada. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome; you do not need to be an AARP member or a retiree to volunteer.

How the Volunteer Program Works

Tax counselors receive free tax preparation training. Volunteers should be computer literate; since most AARP Tax Aide sites provide e-filing for faster tax returns. While it is helpful if you have some experience in tax preparation (even in doing your own taxes); it is not absolutely necessary. We ask our volunteers to provide four to six hours per week from the first week in February until April 15 if at all possible.

We also have openings for volunteers who are not comfortable preparing taxes but want to assist with reservations and completing various intake forms. These non-tax volunteers help customers one-on-one at tax sites in communities such as Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson, Mesquite, Carson City, Dayton, Gardnerville, Yerington, Fallon, Topaz Ranch Estates, Silver Springs, Reno, Fernley, Incline Village and Elko. It’s a great way to be involved in your community.

Volunteers are reimbursed on a limited basis for qualified program-related expenses.

Free Tax Help Available

Our Tax Aide sites open the first week in February and stay open through April 15. Low to middle income taxpayers of all ages are welcome at over 40 sites in Nevada.
