Day of Service Project Supports U.S. Troops Abroad

About 70 AARP staff, members and volunteers are set to celebrate AARP’s Day of Service by preparing care packages for US Troops abroad. The community service project sponsored by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington is designed specifically to reach servicemen and women who do not receive goods or letters from home. On September 14th, from 10am-2pm., the AARP volunteers will get together at five Boys & Girls Clubs in the D.C. area (BGCDC ) where they will put donated items in shipping packages.

“It’s the least we can do to support our troops,” said Louis Davis, senior state director of AARP-D.C., “and we’re pleased to be able to do so in conjunction with our friends at the Boys & Girls Clubs.” The volunteers will fill packages with hygiene, recreational, food and fitness items. The BGCDC goal is to provide 500 care packages this year.

The commitment of AARP to get involved in creating social change in local communities began with Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, who founded AARP with the motto, “To serve, not to be served.” We honor that commitment today by connecting and engaging our members in a wide range of opportunities to serve others.

In addition to AARP’s Annual National Day of Service, the District of Columbia State Office has many ongoing community service projects throughout the year. To learn more about volunteering with AARP, contact Carol Page at cpage@aarp.org.
