AARP encourages people to give back to the community and lists opportunities through its Create the Good web site. Volunteer opportunities include short and long-term commitments, but all are designed to enrich the experience of both the volunteer and the community.
These volunteer opportunities can come from AARP Utah’s own leadership as well; Executive Council Member David Turner has shared volunteer opportunities for those living near Salt Lake County that will enrich the experience of older Utahns. Salt Lake County Aging Services Active Aging Program is looking for volunteer tutors to help older immigrants and refugees improve their English skills so that they can function in the community, communicate with their English speaking grandchildren, and take part in activities. The time commitment is 3-4 hours a week. Training and ongoing support is provided.
The Active Aging Program is also searching for volunteers who are interested in helping teach persons with chronic health conditions about ways to “positively manage” their symptoms. The volunteer leader interacts well with, and is able to direct groups and is a positive role model and representative for the Active Aging Program.
Each volunteer would serve as a facilitator for Healthy Living Workshops at various locations around Salt Lake County. Workshops would be based upon a four-day leader workshop training and completion of a Salt Lake Aging Services volunteer screening process. Each facilitator would work with a co-leader to share in the preparation, teaching, and follow-up activities required.
