AARP Chapters Are a Great Way to Get Involved

En español | With fall approaching, AARP’s 2,100 Chapters come back into session to serve the needs of local communities across the nation. They play a critical role for the Association as they often serve as the face and heart of the local AARP community. Since 1960, the Chapters’ principal objectives and purpose are embodied in the simple motto, “To serve, not to be served”. Chapters act as the strategic link between members and communities and AARP’s programs and services. They provide members with a variety of community service, education, advocacy, leadership, and fellowship opportunities.

As a member of one of AARP’s chapters, you will have the opportunity to give back by working and supporting a range of programs from the AARP Driver Safety Program to local food and clothing drives. John F. Hall, President of the Greater Woodstown Chapter, says that coming out to these events and programs and attending monthly meetings are “a lot of fun for everyone. It’s the perfect way to give back, socialize, meet people, be active, and stay connected.” Overall, for President Hall’s Chapter, being a member is a “pleasant experience”.

Furthermore, as a chapter member, you will have the opportunity to meet your Congressman and local representatives to voice your opinion on issues that matter. President Suzanne Towey-Pelkaus of the Bargaintown Chapter states that one of the things she and her members really enjoy is attending the AARP events and taking trips to the Capitol. She mentions that meeting with Congressman LoBiondo is something she particularly enjoys while working with AARP because she can make a difference and it helps her get involved within the community.

By joining an AARP chapter you’ll gain wonderful experience as you travel around the state to help others, attend events, meet political figures, and simply give back. Lucille Mason, President of the Clifton-Richfield Chapter, stresses that one of the most valuable things she gains from being part of her chapter is the “feeling of satisfaction” when she sees the members of her chapter and those in need smile. She loves doing everything from “helping the handicapped crochet to planning and picking gifts that put a smile on people’s faces.”

Why not get involved this year and make a difference in your community? Make AARP the next chapter of your life. AARP Chapters need your energy, wisdom, and talents to work in service for our fellow citizens and communities. Help them promote a healthy image of living and aging by demonstrating vitality, creativity, and leadership in your community.
