AARP Experience Corps is an early, literacy skills tutoring program designed to provide essential support to struggling students in first through third grades.

“We need volunteers to help tutor kids for the start of this upcoming school year,” said Peggy Goldberg, City of Tempe Program Director for AARP Experience Corps. “We hope to recruit as many as 50 volunteers for the program as we are expanding into two new schools this fall.”

Teachers report that, in addition to the obvious benefit of strengthening students’ reading skills through the AARP Experience Corps program, tutored students also show an increased self-confidence in the classroom.

“The dedicated service of AARP Experience Corps volunteers and the hours they’ve donated to the program has made an impact on the lives of hundreds of kids in Tempe’s elementary schools,” said Goldberg. “Not only does it benefit the kids but volunteers are also rewarded when they see children who are struggling begin to advance their reading skills because of their help.”

AARP Experience Corps volunteers are asked to commit for one entire school year. Volunteers donate five to seven hours per week helping assigned students twice a week. Prospective volunteers must possess a high school diploma and agree to a complete criminal background (fingerprint clearance) and reference check.

The start of the 2013 school year will mark the sixth year the City of Tempe has partnered with the Tempe and Kyrene Elementary School Districts to provide the AARP Experience Corps program to students in grades one through three.
