Since 2003, ME 2-1-1 serves as a universally respected and growing national model that provides community resources to over 190 million Americans in 46 states. In Maine, the 2-1-1 system is managed by United Ways of Maine, in collaboration with Youth Alternatives Ingraham.
ME 2-1-1 provides quick and reliable free information about resources to help individuals avoid foreclosure and find assistance with food, utilities, unemployment, day care facilities, shelters, affordable housing, social services, employment training programs, senior services, medical insurance and other issues. Dialing 2-1-1 connects the caller with an information specialist who provides advice on available community resources. Language translation and TTY services are available to all callers as well.
This information is also accessible online at 211Maine.org. The website enables individuals to privately enter their financial information, which is not saved or accessible to anyone else, and the website then indicates which programs they are potentially eligible for and more extensively describes the programs.
You can find so much information here from Food Supplement Programs to avoiding Lyme disease.
The 2-1-1 infrastructure handles thousands inquiries through its call centers.
At AARP, we encourage our members to utilize this tool to find solutions that makes sense for their personal situation. The 2-1-1 service might just be the right solution.
