Create the Good Joins Cesar Chavez Day of Service

About 100 volunteers with AARP Arizona and Create the Good joined several community and civic organizations for a neighborhood clean-up and graffiti removal event on Saturday, March 27 as part of César Chávez Day of Service. Volunteers canvassed the Garcia, South Phoenix Village and Campito neighborhoods for yard clean-up and graffiti removal. The areas encompassed about 300 homes in South Phoenix.

Organizations in the effort included Hands On of Greater Phoenix, Keep Phoenix Beautiful, Rebuilding Together, the United States Navy, Arizona State University, Girls Scouts of America, AmeriCorps, the Phoenix Mayor’s Office, the City of Phoenix Neighborhood Services and Public Works Departments, the César Chávez Foundation, and the Phoenix City Council Districts 7 and 8.

“AARP’s part in this event coincided with our Create the Good initiative in which we encouraged a spirit of service, rallying people to give of themselves to improve our community,” said Brenda Aguirre, AARP Arizona Create the Good Coordinator. “We asked people to come and help us by volunteering in this community service event.”

In addition to the neighborhood clean-up and graffiti removal in the Garcia, South Phoenix Village and Campito neighborhoods, Create the Good and AARP volunteers were involved in a home improvement project, painting the exterior of a home in one of the target neighborhoods.

About 30 volunteers painted the exterior of the home and also repaired several leaks in the roof of the home, owned by an 88 year old elderly woman.
