Jacksonville Community Leader Takes on Volunteer Advisory Post

AARP Florida State Director Jeff Johnson has appointed longtime Jacksonville community leader Larry Dixon as a member of the AARP Florida Executive Council, a group of top volunteer advisors leading the nation’s largest membership organization for people 50+ in the nation’s “grayest” state.

“AARP Florida is pleased that a person of Larry Dixon’s proven community commitment and leadership capability has agreed to serve in this important role,” said Johnson. “Larry brings a wealth of insight into the issues affecting all Floridians 50+.”

Dixon may be best known in Jacksonville as the former program manager of the Community and Senior Center Services in the City of Jacksonville, a position he served in for many years.

In that role, he was responsible for the daily activities of nineteen senior centers and was instrumental in achieving National Accreditation at the Mary L. Singleton and Lane/Wiley Senior Centers. He also served as past president of the Florida Association of Senior Centers (FASC), was an active member of the Florida Council on Aging, served as past Second Vice-President of Learn To Read, Inc. Board of Directors, and served on the executive committee of Young Life. He also helped advise the Jacksonville United Way on important elder-care issues.

Currently, Dixon serves as an independent coordinator and consultant with the Agency for Persons with Disabilities. He retired from the City of Jacksonville in 2006.

He is married to Jasmine Mitchell, and has four children: Lance, Landes, William and Arianne. … Back to Article
