2012 Targeted Communities Chosen

Each year AARP South Dakota volunteers choose communities in which to focus community service efforts and build a strong volunteer presence. This year’s Targeted Communities, as chosen by volunteers are Milbank, Custer and Hartford.

“Our goal in focusing efforts in these communities is to either support existing programs or projects, or come up with something entirely new to fill an unmet need,” said Leni Healy, associate state director for outreach and education for AARP South Dakota. “As we work to identify projects and activities to support, we want to hear from people living those communities about where the greatest need is, and how AARP can help.”

AARP South Dakota would also like to hear from people in those communities to be part of the Targeted Community activities throughout 2012 and beyond. To nominate projects, learn more, or to get involved email Leni Healy, associate state director for outreach and education, or call AARP South Dakota at 1-866-542-8172.

“We know people 50+ have a tremendous wealth of experience, and desire to give back, and through Targeted Community activities we want to provide opportunities to make a difference and have a positive impact on the community,” said Healy.

In addition to the three new Targeted Communities, AARP volunteers in the 2011 targeted communities of Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Mobridge will continue their efforts, in supporting various community service projects. AARP South Dakota and South Dakota Retired Teacher volunteers in each of these communities held food drives, supported efforts to improve literacy, made improvements to the local cemetery, honored veterans, served meals for the needy, packed school supplies for children and sack lunches for day laborers.

The AARP South Dakota state office will help support the volunteer efforts in each of these communities.
