Arizona Appoints Leadership Volunteers

Volunteerism is the foundation behind much of the work of AARP. In Arizona, AARP is served by a valuable contingent of passionate and committed volunteers who work in a variety of areas including advocacy and community service. The leadership committee of Arizona’s volunteer core is its Executive Council (EC), a group that helps direct AARP’s strategic direction in Arizona.

Recently, AARP Arizona announced the appointments of two new members to its Executive Council. This year, Sigrid Whitman of Phoenix and Daniel Martinez of Gilbert will join the leadership committee.

Whitman has been a volunteer with AARP since 2005 in the area of advocacy and has served on Arizona’s Advocacy Steering Committee in the areas of pension protection, health care reform and consumer protection.

“It’s an honor to be named to Arizona’s Executive Council,” said Whitman. “I look forward to serving in this capacity and working to make a difference in peoples’ lives, especially for those over 50.”

Martinez has been an AARP volunteer since 2009 in the area of multi-cultural and community outreach. He has also served as a member of Arizona’s Advocacy Steering Committee working in the areas of consumer protection and health care.

“I’m excited and honored to be appointed,” said Martinez. “It will be a great opportunity for me to work to make a difference in our communities on issues that are important to people who are 50 plus.”

Whitman and Martinez join a handful of volunteers that make up Arizona’s EC which include Larry Woods of Sun City, Carl Erickson of Litchfield Park, Emilia Martinez-Brawley of Scottsdale and Len Kirschner of Litchfield Park who is the state president for AARP Arizona. The council is overseen by Arizona State Director David Mitchell.

“We’re excited that Sigrid and Dan have agreed to join our Executive Council,” said David Mitchell, Arizona AARP State Director. “They will be a terrific asset to the council’s work with their extensive advocacy and community outreach experience on issues affecting Arizona seniors.”
