'What Matters Is ... Making the Lives of Other People Better'

Obama emphasizes giving back in Tucson, Ariz.

President Barack Obama faced a major challenge. In addressing a memorial service for the victims of the shooting in Tucson, Ariz., he was reaching out to a community wracked with grief, a state that has been roiled politically by violence and hot rhetoric, and a nation mired in coarsening discourse.

In his response, the president tried to instill hope and to appeal to people's higher nature.

It was a call for Americans to use the tragedy to make themselves and the country better.

It was a call to give back.
