Looking for a way to give back to your community and enjoy working with people? Then AARP New Mexico may have just the opportunity for you. The AARP Information Center, located in Albuquerque, is a clearinghouse of resource information and materials that is strictly run by volunteers.

“The Information Center is another way we can put valuable resources in the hands of our members and the public in general,” said Bert Benedick, the Center’s Volunteer Manager. “Not only does the Center have information on AARP’s programs and services but also some of the available resources in the Albuquerque metro area.”

“We’re looking for some really enthusiastic people who like dealing with people and are looking for something to do to help us run the Center, which is done by an all-volunteer group. Not only can these people help us out at the Center but often represent AARP at community events, festivals and resource fairs,” Benedick said.

Duties for staffing the Center include answering the phone and talking to people who might drop by seeking information. Training is done on site.

The Center, which is located at 1930 Juan Tabo NE, Suite J, is open Monday through Friday. Volunteers work three hour shifts, Monday through Thursday, mornings: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and afternoons: 1 to 4 p.m. and on Friday only from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

For more information on volunteering at the Center, please contact Bert Benedick at 505-830-3096 or by e-mail at nmalbuquer@aol.com or Gene Varela, Associate State Director of Community Outreach, at the state office at 505-946-3604 or 1-866-389-5636. Varela can also be reached at evarela@aarp.org.
