You’re Invited – AARP NM to Highlight Community, Local Service Providers at Annual Fall Festival

AARP New Mexico is inviting its members and the general public to a free special event designed to celebrate community. The second AARP New Mexico Fall Festival is set to take place Saturday, Oct. 20th, at the Hispanic Cultural Center’s Plaza Mayor, 1701 4th Street, in Albuquerque, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We wanted a way to bring the community together for some simple fun and family time as well as showcase what AARP and other neighborhood organizations have to offer,” said Shanna Lapsley, AARP New Mexico Associate State Director of Multicultural Outreach.

“Last year’s event was so successful with almost 400 people attending that we really wanted to build on that and create a really special event that mixed music, food and games with some really good resources and services that people might actually need. The event is designed to be fun for the whole family, from small children to grandmas and grandpas,” Lapsley said.

The event will combine a festival atmosphere with a resource fair allowing people to enjoy food, music and games for the children but also have an opportunity to see what community organizations are working in the area and the resources they have to offer so people can become familiar with those organizations should they need their services either now or in the future.

“We also want to highlight the work that AARP does right here at home – right here in Albuquerque and for New Mexicans in general,” Lapsley said.

While AARP is always trying to bring great values to its members, its primary mission is to advocate for people age 50 plus on a variety of issues both at the federal and state levels of government.

AARP New Mexico provides a number of resources for people including help with their finances through the Financial Freedom Tour; watching rate increase requests by utility companies to ensure they are fair, advocating for continued services for the elderly and disabled; and sharing vital information on Social Security and Medicare and not just in the big cities but in communities around the state.

The Fall Festival is a free event but people are encouraged to register at 1-877-926-8300. For more information call Shanna Lapsley at 505-603-6101 or e-mail her at
