Volunteers and staff from AARP in Arizona recently helped pack bags of food for needy families at the Valley View Community Food Bank in Sun City as part of the national organization’s annual Day of Service activities marking Sept. 11.

Every year, AARP staff and volunteers from across the country spend the day in volunteer service as a way to give back to their communities. In Arizona, volunteers with the state office of AARP have turned out to help people in need by working at local area food banks like Valley View Community Food Bank in the West Valley of Phoenix.

About 40 AARP volunteers worked at the Sun City food bank where they filled over 800 bags of groceries, which amounted to more than 1800 pounds of food that was distributed to families in need through the food bank.

“It was a rewarding experience for all of the volunteers and we’re happy to help out at the food bank because there are many people that need help in this tough economy,” said David Mitchell, AARP Arizona State Director.

For more information about volunteering with AARP in Arizona call the state office toll free at 866-389-5649. Opportunities for volunteering with AARP are available throughout the state.
