Hungry in America, Part 2: Hard Choices

What do you need the most? Shelter? Heat? Food?

They're 60 and older and don't have enough to eat. Six million Americans.

You can find them everywhere, but concentrations turn up in surprising places. Places such as Tuolumne County in California. Today, one in five residents there seeks help getting food.

Tuolumne used to be gold mine and lumber country. Now, each year hundreds of thousands of tourists rush through to Yosemite National Park, oblivious to the growing number of people who have taken up residence in empty trailers and homeless camps that dot the area.

Photojournalist Larry Towell and audio journalist Sandy Tolan went to visit those residents and to learn about the difficult decisions they make to survive. The powerful multimedia presentation, "Hard Choices," is the second of four parts in the Hungry in America series produced by Magnum in Motion that AARP.org is rolling out over several months.

Watch "Hard Choices" on the player above. And then watch the other three parts of the series — "A Little Goes a Long Way," "A Healthy Difference," "A Harvest Out of Reach".
