Hungry in America, Part 1: A Little Goes a Long Way

Searching for those who could use some help

More than 6 million Americans who are 60 and older don't have enough to eat. Many of them are eligible for federal help to buy food under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, which used to be called food stamps.

Yet two-thirds of the eligible people in that age group don't enroll in SNAP.

Nancy Hueske wants to find them. In her work for the North Texas Food Bank in Dallas, Hueske tries to understand why eligible people aren't getting the benefits. If she can overcome their initial reluctance or lack of information, Hueske is committed to helping them through the enrollment process.

Photojournalist Christopher Anderson and audio journalist Jonathan Miller accompanied Hueske on her rounds and met people struggling to put food on the table. Their powerful multimedia presentation, "A Little Goes a Long Way," is the first of four parts in a Hungry in America series produced by Magnum in Motion that AARP.org will roll out in the next several months.

Watch "A Little Goes a Long Way" on the player above. And then watch the other three parts of the series — "Hard Choices," "A Healthy Difference" and "A Harvest Out of Reach".
