After a casual encounter with hungry day laborers, Munoz took the first step in what would become an incredible journey. “There’s people out there,” Munoz said. “We got food…we should just be the bridge between this food and those hungry people out there.” So in his small kitchen and with the help of family and volunteers, Munoz began preparing meals for the starving men and women living on the streets of New York City. He and his team now make meals for more than 130 people every night of the week and have given out more than 120,000 meals to date. Munoz’s work has attracted major media attention and in 2007 the New York Times named the Angel of Queens. He also received the Presidential Citizens Medal, the nation’s second-highest honor that can be given to a civilian.
