Improving Nursing Homes — and Helping People Find Good Ones

When Peg's husband needed a nursing home she worried about the quality of care he would receive, but was in poor health herself and felt she had no choices. She did not even know what questions to ask when she visited nursing facilities.

Perhaps you have known someone who received less than optimal care in a nursing home, or heard horror stories about nursing home neglect or abuse. At the AARP Foundation, we believe that every nursing home resident has the right to quality care, but that is not always easy to find, especially for those with limited means.

To help older Americans like Peg and the vulnerable elderly choose nursing homes that are right for them or their loved ones, we are providing reliable information they can count on as they make tough decisions at an emotional time.

Teaming up with AARP, checklists and other information are being distributed that help consumers like Peg ask the right question about nursing home care. But we need to do more, such as establishing a family resource center staffed by specialists. Your support of the AARP Foundation would help us make this essential service available to Americans nationwide.

Will you help the AARP Foundation reach out to older Americans who need our help?
Make a donation to the AARP Foundation.

Your generous tax-deductible gift will help older Americans like Peg choose nursing homes that are right for them or their loved ones.

Peg represents the many stories AARP hears regularly about people in need of answers. Names and details of their stories have been changed as we protect the privacy of all who seek our assistance.
