7 Recipes for Scrumptious Teatime Scones

Try these sweet and savory pastries for an afternoon treat

Afternoon tea, scones, jam, cream.

From low-fat and no-sugar to sweet and tart, scones can be enjoyed for teatime or anytime! — Istock

Americans, too, can indulge in the British tradition of scones and tea in the afternoon — and why not? Scones are single-serving pastries that, when made well, are wonderful, flaky complements to a hot "cuppa." There are a myriad of flavors and ingredients you can use, but these seven delicious recipes (plus one for a tasty tea) are some of our favorites.

1. Orange Scones

by Sheila Lukins and Julee Rosso

These are simple, basic scones — a great recipe for beginners to try. Using a 3-inch round cookie cutter keeps your scones the same size and shape, and helps them cook evenly.

2. Dried Cranberry Scones With Crystalized Sugar Crust

by Frank Mentesana and Jerome Audureau

The sweet and tart flavors in these scones make them perfect to pair with a cup of strong tea in the afternoon. The authors suggest substituting dried sour cherries or candied citrus rind for the cranberries, depending on your preference.
