10 Tasty Pie Recipes for Fall

Go beyond pumpkin: Try mince, lime, pear, quince and ginger this season

5. Sweet Potato Buttermilk Pie

by Matt Lee and Ted Lee

This version of sweet potato pie is a little lower in calories and fat, and higher in fiber, than the recipe above. The addition of buttermilk makes the pie lighter and frothier than its standard counterpart, and almost cheesecake-like (minus cheesecake's heaviness).

Per serving (including crust): 290 calories, 6g saturated fat, 44g carbohydrates, 6g protein, 4g fiber, 325mg sodium

6. Pecan Plus Pie

by Nigella Lawson

This spin on pecan pie adds a bit more zing and flavor to the classic Southern delicacy, combining almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts and pecans. Use good-quality nuts for a tastier pie (note their shelf lives). Serve this dish hot with some vanilla ice cream or cold with whipped cream.

Per serving (including crust): 542 calories, 8g saturated fat, 50g carbohydrates, 9g protein, 4g fiber, 361mg sodium

7. Ginger-Cream Pecan Pie

by Hans Rueffert

Another version of pecan pie that manages to spice things up — in this case with freshly grated ginger in the filling, adding some memorable zest. The recipe calls for a ready-made frozen pie crust, but any pastry crust will work.

Per serving (including crust): 386 calories, 6g saturated fat, 44g carbohydrates, 5g protein, 2g fiber, 150mg sodium

8. Apple and Pear Hand Pies With Raisins and Walnuts

by Ken Haedrich

Check out a recipe that takes advantage of delicious seasonal pears, often forgotten in fall baked goods. These smaller pies are a nice size for picnics, tailgate parties or other outings.

Per serving (including crust): 248 calories, 2g saturated fat, 45g carbohydrates, 3g protein, 4g fiber, 23mg sodium

9. American Apple Pie

by Marion Cunningham

This recipe is about as delicious as it gets — and it's easy for even inexperienced bakers to follow. Use harder varieties of apples for the best texture.

Per serving (including crust): 472 calories, 8g saturated fat, 61g carbohydrates, 4g protein, 3g fiber, 148mg sodium

10. Star-Topped Mince Pies

by Nigella Lawson

Mince pie is a centuries-old British Christmas treat. For Lawson's recipe, you can either use store-bought mincemeat (which is usually a mix of dried fruits, brandy, spices, suet and grated apple) or try her recipe for Cranberry Studded Mincemeat (without suet) when making these pretty little pies.

Per serving (without crust): 150 calories, 0g saturated fat, 36g carbohydrates, 1g protein, 3g fiber, 6mg sodium. Per serving (only crust): 56 calories, 1g saturated fat, 6g carbohydrates, 1g protein, 0g fiber, 9mg sodium
