Three witches at a Halloween party

The Witches of Del Ray, Va.? — Photo by: Chris Usher

Why should children be the only ones to have fun on Halloween? Just because you aren’t about to dress up as a witch to score some candy doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make the most of this altogether amusing holiday.

If you’re planning on being home that evening handing out treats to all the adorable princesses and pirates who will be knocking on your door, why not invite some friends over and have a grownup Halloween party? This is an occasion where you should feel free to be as silly as you please.

Since you’ll be taking turns doling out treats and admiring all your costumed visitors, a multicourse sit-down meal doesn’t make as much sense as a cocktail buffet where your guests can graze throughout the evening, picking up small bites of things sweet and savory.

Here are some festive foods that are in keeping with the season and the holiday.

Honey Mustard Brie With Walnut
This is simple and sophisticated, a wheel of everyone’s favorite party cheese coated with honey mustard and rolled in crunchy nuts, then heated until warm and runny. Delicious.

Rusty Nail
Something about the name of this drink sounds just sinister enough for Halloween. Drambuie is very sweet, but tempered by the bracing potency of the scotch.

Devils on Horseback
These devils may be the only ones you encounter this Halloween, but they are a perennially popular appetizer — and bursting with enticing autumnal flavors.

Betty’s Mulled Cider
This is an aromatic and alcohol-free spiced cider that warms you through and through.
