honey poured over apples

— Larry Crowe/AP

Each year, generations of families come together to celebrate Rosh Hashanah — the Jewish New Year — one of the most important occasions on the Jewish calendar. The holiday meal is an important part of this observance, featuring symbolic foods and beloved dishes from a variety of regional traditions.

The typical Rosh Hashanah meal includes sweet tastes, such as apples and honey, symbolizing hopes for a sweet new year. Other dishes on the menu might include a roast chicken or braised brisket, dried fruits, sweet carrots and honey cake, pomegranates, and round loaves of challah.

Here are some great recipes for dishes you might want to put on your holiday table:

Baked Gefilte Fish
Easier than poaching. Some inventive cooks bake it in a Bundt pan for a decorative finish.

Warm Shredded Lamb Salad With Mint and Pomegranate
Cook the lamb the day before and have more time to enjoy the holiday.

Sweet and Tart Chicken With Apricots
This tender chicken in an aromatic sauce will fall off the bone.

Braised Beef Brisket
Cook low and slow for a tender roast.

Carrot Tzimmes
A sweet carrot side dish.

Apple-Cinnamon Noodle Kugel With Sour Cream
Destined to become a family favorite recipe.

Honey Cake
Traditional Rosh Hashanah cake that symbolizes the hope that the new year will be sweet.

Round Rosh Hashanah Challah
These round loaves are also popular on Yom Kippur eve.
