1. Cranberry and Sage Cornbread by Rick Rodgers

Homemade cornbread is a scrumptious start to dinner. This cranberry-studded dish can be made in under an hour, and pairs well with everything from chili to a Thanksgiving turkey dinner.

Per serving: 222 calories, 4g fat, 34g carbohydrates, 5g protein, 3g fiber

2. Corn Relish by Michael Ruhlman

Here's a different kind of relish. This recipe uses seasonal ingredients to create a fresh, sweet autumnal flavor. It's simple to prepare, only requiring a 30-minute simmer on the stove and cool-down time in the fridge.

Per serving: 99 calories, 0g fat, 23g carbohydrates, 2g protein, 1g fiber

3. Baked Squash with Butter and Maple Syrup by Marion Cunningham

This recipe will fill your home with warm aromas during cooler months. Easily prepared and needing only four ingredients, this baked squash is a healthier alternative to some other autumn side dishes.

Per serving: 228 calories, 4g fat, 46g carbohydrates, 3g protein, 7g fiber

4. White Beans with Tomato by Kathleen Sloan-McIntosh

Dried beans add better texture to slow-cooked dishes than the canned variety. Italian plum tomatoes, Pecorino Romano, and fresh sage, parsley and rosemary give this recipe Mediterranean flavor.

Per serving: 360 calories, 4g fat, 40g carbohydrates, 20g protein, 9g fiber

5. Mama's Maple-Flavored Baked Pea Beans by Linda & Martha Greenlaw

Mama knows best when it comes to cooking. This dish is a great source of fiber and protein. But these baked beans take over a day to make — although their preparation is simple — so plan ahead!
