Auto Insurance Discounts

By: AARP Driver Safety Program | Source: AARP.org | September 2009

Participating states offer price reductions or discounts on auto insurance to motorists who complete the AARP Driver Safety Program, whether in the classroom or by taking the online course.

In many states, the discounts are mandatory. Legislation in 36 states and the District of Columbia requires all automobile insurance companies conducting business in those states to offer insurance discounts to people completing a state-approved driver-improvement course in the classroom. The 36 states are Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Ten states require automobile insurance companies conducting business within their bounds to offer insurance discounts to people completing a state-approved driver-improvement course that is conducted online. Included in this number are Delaware, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, and Washington.*

In those states where auto insurance premium discounts are not mandated, several insurance companies voluntarily provide premium discounts to participants completing the AARP Driver Safety Program course.

Participants must contact their insurance company or agent for more details on any of these options.

*In some states, separate rules apply to online driver-improvement courses. Check with your insurance company or agent before taking an online course to find out whether or not you would be eligible for a discount.
