AARP's Issues & Answers Workshops Can Help Teach You How

Aging in Place is not some new-age place for aging. Universal Design doesn't mean you'll find this kind of design universally. Both are ways of remodeling and designing homes to help you remain safe and comfortable in your home as you age.

Want to know more? Join AARP Delaware for our free Issues & Answers workshop, "Fixin' to Stay," a seminar about home modifications and universal design.

Starting at 8:30 a.m. with breakfast and ending at noon (see dates and locations below), each workshop will begin with a keynote talk with expert Dick Duncan of North Carolina State University's Center for Universal Design.

Duncan will illustrate how incorporating universal design features in our homes can simplify life for everyone. You'll learn how lever door handles, skid-proof tiles, gently graded walkways, cabinets with pullout shelves and other features can be utilized to help us all age safely.

Next you'll select one of two topics to attend during our two breakout sessions. Just pick the one best suited for your own needs. Remember, you can pick one topic within each session time.

Session 1

  • Do-it-Yourself Home Modifications
  • Buying or Building a Universal Design Home

Session 2

  • Contracting for Home Modifications
  • Assistive Devices to Help in Any Home

AARP will host workshops in each of Delaware's three counties. On Nov. 16, we will be at the Embassy Suites in Newark and on Nov. 17 at Dover Downs. We conclude the series on Nov. 18 at the Atlantic Sands in Rehoboth Beach.
