Delaware Celebrates National Safety Month
Source: AARP.org | | June 1, 2003
It may be "National Safety Month" across America but in Delaware June is AARP Driver Safety Month. Much has changed since AARP's Driver Safety Program, formerly known as 55 Alive, was first started in 1979. The top speed limit is no longer 55 (it has gone up) and the age to join AARP is no longer 55 (it has gone down).
For more than 24 years the AARP Driver Safety Program has helped drivers age 50+ refine their driving skills and develop safe, defensive driving techniques. AARP's eight-hour refresher course taught in two four-hour sessions spanning two days costs just $10 per person.
More than 3,800 Delawarean drivers completed this course last year. But, you'll not only learn how to improve your driving skills - you'll save 10% on your personal liability and no-fault insurance premiums for three years. Take the refresher three years later - and save 15%. Now that's an extra incentive to become a safer driver.
Today, safety is everyone's concern - so celebrate National Safety Month with us. Find a class location near you or call 1.888.227.7669. you.
On the Volunteer Front
Delaware's Driver Safety Volunteers Get "Fishy"
They didn't play golf - they didn't even swim, but Delaware's AARP Driver Safety volunteers got to go "fishing" at their semi-annual spring volunteer workshop held at the Maple Dale Country Club in Dover, April 16. After a briefing by National Director Frank Carroll, the attendees were treated to a special session of "Fish" by Cindy Fauerbach of the Delaware State Personnel Office. "Fish" is a nationally-recognized service philosophy that suggests that you "play", "make their day", "be there" and "choose your attitude" to maximize your customer's experience. Participants brainstormed about how they can apply these four principles in AARP Driver Safety training classes. Special meeting highlights included an awards presentation to Associate State Coordinator Richard Ornauer for teaching the most classes (156) and the announcement of new Associate State Coordinators for Sussex County, Don Durost and George Palmer.
AARP Driver Safety Program - New Name, Familiar Faces
The AARP Driver Safety Program, formerly known as 55 Alive, has a new name and a new video that features Delaware's own volunteer instructors, Leon and Georgie Calabrese. And now along with the new "look", Delaware's program is looking for more sites and a cadre of new volunteers. By just volunteering four times per year, you can help your neighbors improve their driving skills - as well as save up to 10% on their car insurance.
