3. The Beverly Hillbillies
"The Ballad of Jed Clampett" was one of a long line of sitcom themes that recounted the whole story of the show in the first 30 seconds or so -- without apology. The Clampetts may have moved to the hills of Bev-er-lee, but the 1962 song was pure Kentucky bluegrass, written and performed by virtuoso pickers Flatt and Scruggs, with a vocal by Jerry Scoggins. Oil millionaire Jed was generally unflappable. But he might have been taken aback by a 1989 video parody, courtesy of "Weird Al" Yankovic, that blended his theme song with Dire Straits' "Money for Nothing."
