After returning to voice Jessie the cowgirl in Toy Story 4, the two-time Oscar nominee — for Working Girl and In & Out — recently played against type as an unconventional Army officer in the second season of Amazon Prime’s Homecoming. Director Kyle Patrick Alvarez had high praise for the actress known for her quirky comic roles (and being actor John Cusack’s sister): “What makes her so good at what she does and her career lasting is because she isn’t eccentric. It’s not strange for strange sake. She’s playing a person she’s built, and she earns it.”

Oct. 13: Jerry Rice, 60

The Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver took a big swing in 2020 when he launched a new energy drink called GOAT Fuel, which includes Cordyceps mushrooms, an ingredient used in traditional Chinese medicine. The company has been an immediate success, and you can now find cans everywhere from 24-Hour Fitness to Walmart. This year, Rice also teamed up with the Red Cross to promote blood donation — even though he’s admitted to being afraid of needles for years!

The controversy-courting enfant terrible of the late ’90s rap scene recently opened a Detroit restaurant called Mom’s Spaghetti, named after a lyric in “Lose Yourself,” his Oscar-winning anthem from 8 Mile. This year he played during the Super Bowl halftime show and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. And he recently recorded a song for the Elvis soundtrack called “The King and I.”

The Brooklyn-born legal personality ended her Emmy-winning series Judge Judy last July after 25 years on the air — a feat that got her into Guinness World Records as the longest-running television arbitrator. But she wouldn’t be off the airways for long: Less than four months later, in November 2021, Sheindlin launched the Amazon Freevee streaming series Judy Justice, which many critics point out is almost identical to its predecessor.

Odenkirk earned 11 Emmy nominations throughout its run, and this March, he released his hilarious book Comedy Comedy Comedy Drama: A Memoir.

He’s also recently dabbled in the world of the gods in Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, and he’s set to play the big guy himself, Zeus, in an upcoming Netflix series called Kaos, which updates Greek mythology to a contemporary setting.

This spring, the country superstar kicked off his World Tour 2022, which includes stops across North America, Europe and Australia. Paisley will be donating a portion of the proceeds to The Store, a referral-based free grocery store for low-income individuals and families in the Nashville area that he founded with his wife, actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley, in 2020. “I knew there was a need, but it’s not until you open something like this that you really see it,” he told NBC Nightly News. “People were in tears.”

Oct. 29: Gabrielle Union, 50

A recent honoree on Time’s 100 most influential people of 2020 list, Union released two books last year, the memoir You Got Anything Stronger? and the children’s book Shady Baby, which she cowrote with husband Dwyane Wade. This fall, she voices a pilot in the Disney animated sci-fi flick Strange World and stars in The Inspection, a drama about a young man who enlists in the Marines after his mother (Union) rejects him for being gay. She’s playing very against type in this role, as she and Wade have been nothing but supportive of their own trans daughter, Zaya, since she came out.
