Listening to certain types of music has been shown to lower blood pressure, relieve depression, stabilize blood pressure and even lessen the need for sedatives and pain killers during and after surgery.

Dr. Joanne Loewy is at the forefront of practicing music therapy and investigating its benefits.

Dr. Loewy directs The Louis Armstrong Department of Music Therapy at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York and has edited two books on music therapy, “Music Therapy and Pediatric Pain” and “Music Therapy in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.”

In this wide-ranging conversation, Mike covers how music therapy started to gain acceptance in medical circles, how it can benefit patients with heart disease and much more.
