It's the best of times and worst of times for this inventive Portland, Ore., band led by Colin Meloy. Their latest album, The King Is Dead, topped Billboard's album chart. But the Decemberists are touring without keyboardist/accordionist Jenny Conlee, who is battling breast cancer. Their live shows combine literate folk-rock with rollicking audience participation.
