Patti Smith's Just Kids

Concord Rock bios Patti Smith

Far richer and more evocative than a career play-by-play, Smith's book tells movingly of the years she shared with her soul mate, roommate and sometime lover, Robert Mapplethorpe (the late, controversial photographer). Theirs is the story of unknown downtown "kids" on the brink of fame during the mid-'60s and '70s, a time when anything seemed possible. Smith, a poet-turned-songwriter whose biggest hit was "Because the Night," co-written with Bruce Springsteen, depicts New York's edgy, exuberant art and music scenes of the era with the voice of the true insider she was. Winner of a 2010 National Book Award, Just Kids is now in paperback.
