If you had the good fortune of meeting jazz legend Louis Armstrong, he may have called you Pops. With too many new names to remember, that’s what he called people he met, says Terry Teachout, The Wall Street Journal drama critic and Armstrong’s new biographer.
Armstrong’s friends starting calling him Pops, “And it stuck,” Teachout says. “So it became the name by which he was known to those in the know.”
