Writer-Director Mike Leigh's Another Year explores the lives of a group of old friends over the course of a year, as seen through the eyes of a long-happily married couple (Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen). Among their friends is the nervous, bird-like Mary, played by Lesley Manville. She tells Bill Newcott that Leigh has a most unusual way of preparing his actors for their roles...and then Leigh explains why he wouldn’t have it any other way.
