I never really thought I was Filipino. When I was little, I took a blond wig off my sister's doll and tried to wear it. In high school I permed my hair and acted black. I wanted to be part of something bigger. When they took the census they'd ask, "Caucasian, black, Spanish, other?" I'd always be "other"! But at this age it has become important for me to know who I am. I've realized that letting go of expecting to look like something you're not is a lifelong process.
