The Real Elizabeth

Celebrations lasted several days throughout London for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Despite her seeming reticence, she's loved by many in England and the Commonwealth. — Corbis

Crowned in 1952 at age 25, England's Queen Elizabeth II has guided the Commonwealth for six decades. She moved into the spotlight as a girl, encouraging fellow children to remain brave during World War II and making public appearances on behalf of her ailing father, King George VI.

Though long loved and respected worldwide, the queen eventually found the greatest challenges in her own home. Unprecedented divorces and the death of the defiant Princess Diana, magnified by the exploding media industry, had many British arguing for the dissolution of the outdated, costly Windsor institution.

Still others maintain a devoted adoration for the royal family and its indomitable leader. And on the celebration of Queen Elizabeth's diamond jubilee, Andrew Marr in his book The Real Elizabeth delves into the life of one of England's longest-reigning monarchs. Listen to his conversation with Mike Cuthbert, host of Prime Time Radio, with the audio player above.
