MY GENERATION

The Americans

Photographer Robert Frank's Vision of 1950s America.

In the 1950s, Swiss-born photographer Robert Frank looked beneath the surface to reveal a different America, one that was rarely acknowledged and often denied. Through his photographs, he created a portrait of America that was raw and real—one that touched on issues of race and class and left the viewer with an unflinching impression of our country. At the time, critics said his photos depicted the wrong picture of America—one that many were not ready to see.

Today, The Americans by Robert Frank is recognized as one of the greatest photography achievements in American history. My Generation's Stephen Menick shows us how this uncomfortable, yet beautiful collection offers a rare glimpse into our nation’s unsung past.
