As a follow-up to the well-received PBS documentary “Caring for Your Parents” that aired on KUED in April, Utah caregivers will have the opportunity to do some hands on learning at Hand in Hand: Utah Caregiving, a seminar to be held June 14 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Library’s main branch located at 210 East 400 South, in Salt Lake City. Keynote speaker for the event is Elinor Ginzler, AARP’s Director of Livable Communities and co-author of the book, Caring for Your Parents, The Complete Family Guide.

Attendees will learn about everything from navigating the paper trail required for Medicare and Social Security to assessing the safety of elder parent’s houses to asking physicians the right questions, and more.

The day will conclude with a Q&A session with a local team of expert panelists including:
• Linda Hilton, Director, CORC (Coalition of Religious Communities)
• Alan Ormsby, Director, Utah Department of Aging and Adult Services
• Manuel Romero, Utah Department of Health
• Maureen Henry, Director, Commission on Aging
• Micheal Styles, Director, Office of Black Affairs

This panel will answer questions generated throughout the day from the other dynamic sessions scheduled with more Utah experts in the field of caregiving. Time will also be taken to address some of the perceived cultural and economic barriers of caregiving.  This session will be moderated by Ginzler.

Since joining AARP in 1998, Ginzler has been a key leader in AARP independent living/long-term care efforts and has been instrumental in planning, designing, coordinating and overseeing programmatic work in these areas. With over 20 years experience in service delivery systems to the elderly, she has an extensive work history in program management and development, as well as experience in working collaboratively with public, private non-profit and community-based organizations. She is an expert on long-term care issues, including home and community-based services, caregiving, nursing home quality and other long-term care housing issues.

The seminar is sponsored by KUED, AARP Utah, Salt Lake County Aging Services and Utah Caregiver Support Program.
