Census projections estimate a total Latino population of 49.7 million, equal to 17 percent of the U.S. population, of which 8.6 million will be Latinos aged 50+.

2010 Census Timeline

February and March
Census questionnaires mailed or delivered to every household.

April 9
Deadline for returning census questionnaires.

Between April and July
Census takers visit households that did not return a questionnaire.

December
Census Bureau delivers state population counts to President Barack Obama to begin the process of apportioning the 435 U.S. House of Representative seats among the 50 states.
