I use an electric scooter. How does this work for the airlines? Does it have to go in with the baggage or can I keep it with me?

Most airlines have similar policies regarding scooters, so here is a sample of popular airlines and their policies. Basically, you can take your scooter as far as the Jetway. Here are some examples:

Delta Airlines policy: Delta will transport all types of wheelchairs, including scooters. You can arrange to have Delta check your personal wheelchair at the departing gate and return it at the destination gate when you arrive, or at a connecting airport. Let them know in advance if you prefer to use your own personal wheelchair at your connecting airport. However, you should be aware that the time between connecting flights may be insufficient to provide this service during layover, especially if disassembly and re-assembly of your wheelchair is required. If time is a factor, Delta recommends that you take advantage of their wheelchair service instead.

American Airlines: American accepts scooters as checked luggage. They try to transport it as a whole, but request that customers bring disassembling instructions in case that is necessary. American also offers courtesy wheelchair service.

United Airlines: United will also check your scooter free of charge and will provide you with an attendant to assist you to the gate. If you prefer, you can check your scooter at the gate, or at the ticket desk when you first check in.

Most airlines are quite accommodating and will work to minimize the amount of time you're away from your scooter. The key is to let your air carrier know about your situation.
