Living in Arizona, the great southwest, and having plenty of room for our horses and dogs, we were concerned that all the animals wouldn't get along safely. After all, two 25 pound Rat Terriers are no match for two 1,000 pound horses!

I decided to introduce the dogs, Levi and Wrangler, to the horses. The horses thought that was just fine, and stuck their great big faces over the fence toward Wrangler, the dog I had in my arms. Wrangler's eyes got real big, I could feel his body push against mine, and he shoved his head between my chin and shoulder, in a valiant effort to hide. I let Wrangler get down out of my arms, and he was gone in a flash! I swear, he moved faster than a speeding bullet! No problem - our property is fenced, so wherever he went, he was safe.

Next dog to hopefully introduced was Levi. I figured Levi, being more of a tough guy, would probably stare down those horses, and so I scooped him up in my arms, and over to the fence we went. One look at the huge heads reaching out to sniff him, and Levi shot out of my arms and, like Wrangler, was gone!

At first, I was disappointed. Darn...I'd hoped they'd get along. Then it came to me that it was probably better that the dogs didn't want any part of meeting the horses. That way, they'd stay away from them. I was right. Ever since that day years ago, The dogs have decided the horses' fence is a stopping point in their travels, no matter what they're chasing. Of course, when we play ball, and I make a bad throw that lands over the horses' fence, I'm the one that has to play fetch!
