As a "New Worker" there are plenty of reasons to be anxious when starting a new job - new manager, new colleagues, new organizational culture. All of these factors can leave you with butterflies in your stomach. When I began working a AARP three years ago, I was certainly anxious but I quickly became excited about turning all of my anxiety into new opportunities.
I began introducting myself to people randomly, attending staff events and slowly getting to know others by name. And this was a very important part of relinguishing all the anxiety I was intially experiencing. I made sure I remembered the names of the staff I met. This was helpful when I met them again. I was able to ask them about the department in which they worked, their responsibilities and how to navigate through the organization. Now, all of this experience did not come overnight, but it was really helpful in providing me the running start I needed as a new worker in an organization.
Now, I am able to share that my anxieties have blossomed into new and wonderful opportunities and great learning experiences. So, as a new worker, I suggest taking it slow and not expecting everything to fall together at once. As a new worker, I had the advantage of meeting new people, sharing new ideas, learning new concepts, and gaining new friends. Priceless!
