I was wading the creek by the house fishing when I saw the fawn in a clump of gr****just after I had started. I passed him by and moved on up the creek as I knew this was a common crossing and does will leave their fawns lying in cover and try to divert attention away. As I went on I knew I had not hears one blowing and when I came back by 2 hours later he was still there. I saw a coulpe buzzards come up between myself and the road and stepped up un the bank and saw mama, hit by an auto most likely or could have been natural as this one was only 2 or 3 days old. I picked him up and he began to squall and kick. I got him home and called the vets office to ask about Wildlife Rehab nearby. I did not know there was one about 10 miles away, but they called me back and said someone would be out within an hour. 98 deg. and 4 hours later I decided to take him to the vet and all the way over he was standing licking the sweat from my arm. I stopped and gave him water from my hand. I got over there and one of the techs asked why I was holding him the way I was. I have been kick by them and baby goats before. Dhe said I was going to smell like a deer and I told her there was no smell, a young deer and most other wildlife have no scent for the first few weeks of their life. Natures way of giving them a slight edge on survival. They all tried to find a smell and were puzzled as there was none. TWRA our wildlife agency wants everyone to just leave them where they find them and let nature take it's course. I may be a deer hunter, but I have compassion. Someone pointed out I was upsetting the balance of nature I believed so dearly in. I said, No, I'm just putting it back on even footing after his mother died an unatural death being hit by a car. Probable cause anyway. The rehab lady kept him for four days and took him out one evening near her farm where there were deer feeding and set him out. Went straight to a doe with fawn. New mom. They seem so much better than us at that. Tommy
Chief Joseph was one of the most intelligent and practical men who ever lived, close to his knowledge if not equal was Tecumseh of the Shawnees. I go to www.First People.com and from the home page everywhere. Entire sections for Eagle Pics, Bear Pics, Wolf and every other animal held sacred to the many tribes. The section with the heading Native American Words of Wisdom and Stories is my favorite. Some of the speeches were as eloquent, heart rendering, and enlightning as I have ever read. I have copied hundreds of sepia toned photos from their web site. Photos from 1875-1925. Check it out. I always have to reccommend to anyone with the least bit of Scots-Irish blood to read "Born Fighting" or How the Scots_Irish Shaped America. by Jim Webb, now U S Senator from VA. This was his first non-fiction after several fiction. If you read this book you will be amazed at what you will learn of yourself and those before you and why they did some of the things they did. My brother, 12 years older in LA, read it and had to tell me about it, first from the title as he knew I got irritated at people for saying Scotch Irish. I would tell people Scotch is a whiskey. It is Scot or Scots. I have always been proud of my mixed heritage (that is until I found I was Hillary Clinton's 8th cousin, oh it's ok, She, I, and Doc Holliday have the same common ancestor) and in doing extensive research have found I had ancestors on both sides of the Civil War from two families, 2 died for the south, I have found 5 ancestors who fought in the Rev for Colonials and one Tory, and one British, and one British who was killed at BannockBurn and others fighting with William Wallace and his successors.
Back to Ken, I had three Eagle Feathers carved in the upper right and a Unicorn in the lower left of his Headstone. Take care Tommy
Hi Tjohn. I'm so enjoying your pictures and reading your thoughts and comments. The picture of you with the little buck is touching, and this one with your granddaughter is precious. What an incredible life you live and are giving your beautiful granddaughter! Thank you for your pictures and for your writings.
I read your comments on cremation today in reference to Logger/Sharon. That was pure beauty.
Your heritage is the same as my sons. I'm the English/Scott/Irish/Welsh/Canadian/American. My husband was English with Native American. Both my sons are very interested in this part of their lineage, but especially my eldest, now deceased son, Doug. He lived by the credo, Chief Joseph and Sitting Bull were his guides/heroes as was my father, his grandfather who was taught to fish and hunt and was a blood brother to Chief Louie of the Piutes. He taught Doug what he was taught. On his tombstone, I worked with an artist/stone cutter to create it, we chose a rock shaped like a mountain, so it is an up right stone, on the back is an eagle feather with "gone fishing" and on front is an eagle soaring and a white buffalo beneath. A friend made him a print of a grizzley bear and placed it in front -- another Lakota friend brought 3 ancient arrow heads to put in his pocket at burial to help him in his journey ahead. You brought out many memories for me. Thank you. And seeing your pictures makes me yearn for a life I once knew. Romneykat/Kate
