My Front Door is Pink by Subito

My Front Door is Pink

By Subito

To be home in a place that is mine, and alone-
It is mine now that I am just me-
Is at once a rare pleasure and sometimes a pain.
Contrasting the rules of a former domain,
I now choose which one it will be.

When I choose to enjoy being home, and alone,
I tour through my home like a guest-
Enjoying the candles and sandlewood soap;
Marveling at how superbly I cope
With what little I have…He got the rest.

But what I have left is all mine, and alone
I‘m directing this show.
I allow my old cat to drink from the sink,
I painted my front door a great shade of pink,
And if I want to go out, I just go.

Oh, sometimes it hurts to be home and alone
With no ‘someone special’ to share
The moments of pleasure I have in my life,
Or the pain that comes from the ironic strife
Of nobody else being there.

And so there’ll be times when I’m home and alone
And ‘lonely’ comes knocking once more.
I’ll welcome it like a good hostess would do;
Escorting it out when the evening is through
While admiring the paint on my door.

I wrote this after I had separated from my  former husband and moved to my own home, kids moved out and I found myself enjoying my new situation. I wrote this for all those people out there who need to make the change but are afraid of what might be on the other side of that decision. For me, that included a new  husband a few years later, and he is the love of my life. And, my front door isn’t pink anymore, but a very nice shade of green!

Thanks to all of you for that great feedback on my Pink Door Poem. I have been away for a week without a computer and totally missed my debut on the front page. Rats! I am so glad that it did help some folks, though. It was such a nice surprise to hear from you all. Subito

Your poem struck home with me and it gave me great pleasure to read because it express for me what I want for my mother who is now a widow and is struggling to live alone without her mate (my father). I'll have my mother read your words of inspiration becuase I think she is ready to paint her door a different color. Keep on writing and perhaps some day I can return the favor of forging some of words of inspiaration for you. Thank you, olmace.

What a lovely poem! I can relate, having been widowed many years ago. Keep writing, and we'll keep reading!

I agree with the well-deserved kudos for the poem. Congrats! My ex just remarried, much to my surprise. No what I expected or wanted. It is what it is. Now what? The pain of "no one else being there," as the poem puts it, at least for now.

A wonderful poem. It also applies to life when you become a widow. I could really relate. Thanks for sharing and congratulations for the front page placement.

Hey, I was going to comment on your poem and your beautiful pink doors. Then I find you now have the journal on the front page. Congradulations!!!! Several years ago I painted our front doors cherry red! There were many different reason's for doing so! But this is a wonderful poem - I have read it several times!!
