Computer phobia of the seniors

Most of us, oldies, have a phobia about computers. We generally hate computers because we cannot handle them as easily as we could handle the typewriter. But the time has changed. And it will further change ... more rapidly than we wish. Knowledge of computers are fast becoming a MUST. First it was the college students who had to learn the computers because their term papers were not accepted unless they were produced by a computer. Typewriters have become obsolete. Pretty soon they will end up in museums. Stores do not sell typewriters anymore. Typewriter repair places, mostly, have gone out of business. Now a days, even kindergarten students are learning to use computers in school. My 5 year old grandson knows how to find the picture of a rocket in Google or how to find his favorite Disney movie in YouTube (he only needs little help with the spelling of words), He knows how to play the movie, put it on pause, or stop it. He knows how to play the previous or next movie, enlarge the window in the computer, and so forth. It is really amazing! What did we know when we were 5? He even one day suggested to me to bring up Webster's dictionary online to check the spelling of a word!!!

Many newspapers are no longer, or will be no longer, available on print -- they will be available online only.  President Obama is making heavy use of the computer to keep in touch with the Public, since the time he won the elections. His appetite for Blackberry has become legendary. The Secret Service had to make special security arrangements to give him permission to use his Blackberry so that he can keep in direct touch with selected people. No other American President had done that in the past. I doubt if John McCain would have done the same had he won the elections. Because he is old school, whereas President Obama is younger and prefers to utilize the latest technology.

Okay, let me come to the point. I, myself, first learned to use the computer when I was already 55 years old. I learned it completely by myself. I am a self-taught person. I not only learned it, I mastered it. Then, as my unique way of giving back to the community (I have no money to donate), I started publishing FREE computer tutorial sites to HELP ESPECIALLY THE SENIORS. (This is because I was myself hesitant to ask my daughter computer questions for fear of being laughed at!) All my sites became very popular and I received many compliments and blessings from seniors from around the globe literally. At that time Windows XP was not introduced in the market. Windows 98 was the Operating System for PCs at the time. After that several versions of Windows came. Most people today use Windows XP around the world, though Windows Vista is the latest Operating System.

I could not find time earlier to write tutorials on the latest system. But recently, I decided to drop everything else to write at least about Windows XP, which the vast majority of people are using today. So I just published my latest computer tutorial (4th in the series) called:

Help with Windows XP

Anybody who thinks he/she could use some help is most cordially invited to check out the site. It is truly FREE, there are no strings attached. I don't need any money (may be just your blessings). If you have any suggestions/comments you can e-mail me. There is no Guestbook at the site yet. Oh, one more thing. Please spread the word. I am sure you know somebody who could use some help.

Links to my previous 3 computer tutorial sites are listed on the left side of this page under my Background.

I just did a quick breeze thru of that starter group. Did pick up new knowledge. Your comment on tabs to open a new window I will try. I too mostly learned as I went. Some courses I took 2 years before I got my first computor. Many classes are so big you do not learn much. I am left with gapeing holes in my knowledge. I had this $1300.00 laptop for 3 months before I tryed it. I still have my Second computor to fall back on. Still need to get into Photo Programs. Some day!! LOL Thanks! Art

Dear Art:

Thanks for your comments. I know the feeling ... I have suffered myself like many. I can't tell you everything here. I think, you are better off if you start to learn from the beginning so that a solid foundation is built before you move on to a little higher level. I recommend, you start from my "ABC's of Computing" the third link on the left side of this page. The previous sites (except ABC's of Computing) begin with a chapter called "Meaning of a few (very few) computer terms". You please read that. I have made them sooo easy to understand. If you still do not understand something, feel free to e-mail me.

"Tab" is really not a computer term. It is a plain English word. Have you seen a Accordion Type Folder where there are many compartments? To easily know which compartment contains what kind of papers there are usually "Tabs" (paper cut in a way so that a part is raised) where you can attach lebels or just hand-write A, B, C, etc. or "Bills", "Receipts", "Letters" etc. A "browser" is a software which lets you browse the Web or visit different Web sites (see my "Internet Basics for Seniors" -- Meaning of some common terms). Your Internet Explorer is a browser, Firefox is a browser, Netscape (very few people use it these days) is a browser. If you look on the top part of your Internet Explorer 7.0 or higher, or Firefox 2.0 or higher (whatever you are using to read this) you will see there are at least 2 cuts -- one says AARP Online Community, the other one may be blank. Those cuts are "Tabs". Click on the blank Tab. It will say (if you are using Internet Explorer), "You've opened a new tab". You can visit a different web site from that Window.

My latest Windows XP tutorials assume you have some basic knowledge of computing. If not, please start from "ABC's of Computing", then "Computer Help for People Over 50", then "Internet Basics for Seniors", finally "Help for Windows XP". You cannot but learn.

Best wishes and kind regards,

Shoban

You are doing a service to a population that does need help. The distances to get schooling are too much for many. If they do go they are lumped in with a group that already knows the basics and can type at a much faster speed. Termonoligy is a big sticking point. And sometimes what you might consider Basic is not to some one else. I put a Short Cut to your Home teaching Page on my my desktop. I notice on your page for learning Internet you caution people to add a "Tab". I am one of those that is not familliar with Tabs! I tried it a few times and where they went, I know not!! LOL Browsers are totally confusing for many. I never use any of the things they have. Do not know all the terms!! When I went to school, only Business Courses took Typing. Computers?? We were not allowed to use Calculators!! You buy a Computor now and you do not get a Manual to read. It is either in the computor you bought , or on line. Pretty intimidating for a New Bee! I will check out your Tutorials. I may be be back with questions. And I am now on my third computor and run Vista. Art
