Alert: Beware of Bogus Charities

May 27, 2008

The worst kind of scam artists imaginable are taking advantage of the natural disasters in Myanmar and China. In just the last two weeks, numerous bogus web sites have popped up claiming to be raising funds for Asian hurricane and earthquake victims.

If you receive emails from anyone requesting contributions for these efforts, do not respond directly to the email or call any phone numbers listed there, regardless of how legitimate the communication may look. Scammers are very good at imitating the real charities' communications and freely borrow logos and language.

To be sure your contribution goes to the people who really need it, type the Internet address of a known relief agency directly into your web browser or dial a phone number you look up yourself.

All that being said, the disaster victims do need help from all of us. Here’s are clickable links to a short list of legitimate groups helping the relief efforts:

Myanmar -

International Rescue Committee

Doctors Without Borders

China -

Chinese Philanthropy Global Partnership

World Vision

Your contributions will do much to help.
