My Journals (2)

I am doing it ... the hunt for my PhD in Social Work/Counseling is ongoing.  I am carrying an A average ... not too bad, since it has been a 15 year gap with my last degree.  I feel invigorated, renewed and can spend all day on my studies.  The smell of books is once again, intoxicating.  It is fairly obvious, learning is my favorite past time.

With the Creator's help, I intend to maintain the momentum.  Being able to work towards a Doctorate is truly a gift from Above and I am grateful for the opportunity!   No more fear ... I am here!!!

I volunteer with the Fort Worth/Dallas Birthing Project. The mortality rate for African American and Hispanic babies is 17% in this area. The Birthing projects has a Sister Friend Program, which finds mentors, like myself, matches us with a pregnant mom. 80% are unwed teenagers. We mentor the mom through the pregnancy and childbirth. And, stay with her for the first year of the child's life. Generally, we form lifetime relationships with both mother and child. We teach many parenting, SIDS, and birthing classes, offering to help moms maintain healthy babies and encouraging the Moms to complete high school, go on to college or complete technical training of some type, which will allow them contribute to society.

The Birthing Project also has an Aintie Tia program that has Dulas to help in alternative childbirth procedures. They serve as midwives. The website is: http://www.fwdbirthingproject.org/ Please feel free to review and if so moved, contributions and positive publicity are always welcome.

Thank you again,
